I see these lawless mobs as “rent-a-mobs” mobilized to create political theatre to serve a narrative. But they can serve as real stormtroopers against political enemies but in a manner that grants their true masters plausible deniability. So in a sense this represents a form of domestic terrorism against political opponents: damned if you do send in the troops (authoritarian oppression they yell!) and damned if you don’t (ineffective weak government they yell !) The trick is to identify the real squad leaders and financial backers and logistics coordinators and to arrest them and isolate their communications with each other and their street rent-a-mobs.
